Chapter Seven

MAYA

That night, I tried to make sense of what Siru told me. I didn’t come any closer to understanding him.

He said he was putting me in his living quarters to keep me safe. From what? From whom?

My mind came up with all kinds of scenarios, everything from a possible Quarek attack on the water to us going through some hostile territory and having a possible threat come onto the boat looking for me. Who would be looking for me or even know I was on this planet, aside from Earth’s space program and our allies from the Wanderstar Fleet?

I dozed off still thinking about it and woke up late the next morning. After getting dressed and eating a cold breakfast that was left outside the door, I went to the bridge to check on the navigation equipment. The systems were operational, but we were still twenty-four hours out from reaching Elyse Island.

I spent a couple hours familiarizing myself with the grid before my next stop that afternoon. I went to top deck to see if I could assist with making more nets or cleaning.

I waved to Qwan and Brurk. Both looked like they hadn’t slept at all last night. From more than ten feet away, I could see the dark circles beneath their eyes. Their eyes had a noticeable gleam to them, reminding me of sick bay patients who were fighting fevers or malaria.

“Brurk, good afternoon. Are you doing well?”

Brurk shot a glare at me before venturing to the bow of the ship. Guess not.

“You shouldn’t be out here, Maya.” Siru came towards me, carrying two sharpened spears under one arm.

“It’s not safe now?” I waited until he was standing beside me to say the rest. “I thought you said I needed to be careful tonight, not this afternoon.”

“It can get worse every hour. You should be below deck.”

I was getting tired of being told where I needed to be. “Let me get some air and then I’ll go make myself scarce.”

Siru didn’t appear well-rested either today. His eyelids looked heavy and his brow was stretched in a constant frown, a stark difference from how fresh and restored he looked when he came out of his quarters yesterday morning.

“On second thought.” He produced a key from his pocket. “Start bringing your things into my quarters.”

I shielded my face from the bright afternoon sun. “Are you serious?”

“Very.”

He walked past me to go hand the spears to Arilo. I wondered what the bosun was going to do with them, but decided it would be pointless to ask. It wasn’t like Arilo would be more willing than Siru to tell me anything. The whole crew appeared to be more secretive and reluctant to answer questions.

Even the wind was on Siru’s side. It pushed at my back as I walked across the deck to return below. It didn’t take long for me to gather my stuff from my quarters and take a trip seven feet across the hall.

The door to Siru’s quarters was open.
